When we were traveling in Europe we'd often talk with other travelers about our perceptions of people from around the world. Everyone had a lot to say about Americans. It wasn't all bad, but their main issues were generally that we can be abrasive, aggressive, and overly gracious ("Thank you SO SO SO much!!!" can come off as insincere - go figure!) It's all stuff we've heard before, and it's all stuff that bothers me about our culture as well. But it also made me think about all my favorite parts of what makes us who we are.
I love that we thank people gratuitously for tiny services, because we genuinely want to make people feel valued. I love that our president calls himself "the bear" and mispronounces Chipotle because he's a parent and parents can't pronounce Chipotle. I love that there are still people "occupying" Wall Street. I love our diversity, and how hard most of us try to embrace eachother's differences.
Those are the things I'll be celebrating this year. With a hotdog and a super-sized Coke.

ReplyDeleteI'm with them on the whole over-the-top-sentimental... Maybe we've trying to balance out the more abrasive types? Happy Fourth (yesterday). Love your look!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute outfit! So festive and summer-y.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, as someone from England it's made me smile a bit as I know how this came about! As you say every culture has it's stereotype, I know us Brits do! Lovely dress too, very patriotic - happy 4th for the other day :-)
