I have a confession: I'm a terrible thrifter. As much as I love the idea of picking up a few new favorites for next to nothing, it's never been my forte. I have a few excuses: a hard-to-fit body type and a huge sensitivity to my environment, but in the end it all boils down to this: I'm missing out.
Skyla, on the other hand, is a magical thrifting wizard. And she's sharing some of her best tips and tricks with us today! Let me tell you, she knows what she's doing. We went to a few thrift stores this weekend and she helped me find a few new favorites, including the perfect pleated midi and adorable clutch we shared in yesterday's outfit post.
So here you have it: your guide to thrifting your way to a new wardrobe!
1. Wear comfortable clothing like leggings and a fitted top. That way it will be easy to change quickly AND you can still try things on over top if there isn't a dressing room.
2. If something is too big but you love it, don't sweat it. With the money you're saving you can easily tailer it down and still save a pretty penny. Or teach yourself a new skill and DIY it!
3. Mom jeans make excellent high waisted shorts with a snip-snip here and a quick stitch around the cuffs.
4. If it's not worth investing time and effort into a piece that isn't perfect - don't buy it.
5. If you can't see yourself wearing something, don't buy it. Unless that's because it's too cray-cray. You never know when you'll lady up and get the courage to wear something fierce!
6. Think of the houseware possibilities! Spray paint can work wonders to modernize pieces that aren't quite right. Squint your eyes and look for pieces with great lines and decent condition.
7. Take coffee and food breaks as needed. Shopping for several hours at a time isn't for everyone.
8. Love a dress but hate the color? Dye it black. All black er'rthing. You can do no wrong with black.
9. The next time you go to a shoe store that has those little panty hose shoe liners, snag a pair. Bring them with you if you get the heeby jeebies from trying on thrifted shoes barefoot.
10. If you love something but can't figure out how to wear it, Pinterest that shiz! It'll give you a ton of inspiration and you'll soon figure out several ways to wear that new item!

This is fab! Skyla is definitely a wizard. I just wrote a post on thrifting tips, too--I'm OBSESSED with Goodwill shopping and buy probably 90% of my clothes secondhand. How to Score at the Thrift Store

I definitely needed some of these tips! I'm terrible at thrifting! Hopefully I can think of these when I venture into a thrift shop again.

These are some great tips. I know some folks hit mental blocks when thrifting because something isn't just right. But that's when you do like you said and learn something new!
ReplyDeleteDyeing it black is a great idea! Also, wearing a tank top is helpful for trying on clothes fast!
